Grandaddy

This week I’m back in my hometown of Raleigh, and while a visit is usually a happy occasion, the passing of my Grandfather was unfortunately the reason for my trip.

“Big Deane” as he was usually referred to (we have an unusual amount of Deane’s on our family, so this was his distinction), was one of the most funny, interesting and caring people I ever had the pleasure of knowing.  It’s a comfort to know he’s smiling down on me now.

With his always perfectly timed one-liners that got a laugh out of even the biggest sour puss, the heavens will definitely be smiling when they gain this angel.

As this week is for honoring his memory, I will be resuming posts Monday.

Electric feel

electric redo

I feel like everyone has one piece in their closet that really screams their personality.   For me, it’s my electric pink, cashmere dress.  I’ll admit, this was definitely an investment piece, and with the color being so bright, I has my reservations.

However; the fact that I love pink (this particular shade was simply stunning) and the material played right into my weakness for cashmere, I knew this piece was me.  The versatility has been amazing and I love the fact that it’s technically a cooler weather dress but refuses to give into the whole “it’s cold and miserable, therefore I must be an equally dark color”.  I always love clothing with attitude 🙂

Change of color

One of my favorite Autumn adventures was always driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC right as the seasons clicked and the leaves began to turn.  The colors were simply breathtaking and it really solidified the kickoff of the holiday season.

This year, I’m just as excited to see the leaves cross over in NYC.  I can see why it’s one of the best times to be in the City.  A walk through Central Park over the weekend was the perfect way to take in the changing season.

Layer up

This week was insanely busy, with the highlight being the delivery of our 28 boxes arriving from Sydney.  While I was elated to be reunited with my clothes, I have come to several conclusions:

1. It may be possible to own to many pairs of jeans (my husband would have had a full on panic attack if he had been around for the unpacking of my “denim boxes”).

2. Boxes in large groups can be gang like and scary.

3. International moves are a completely different undertaking all together.

As I’ve attempted to “break up the gang” of towering boxes, I am grateful that their arrival has been perfect timing with the onset of Winter.  Many of my layering pieces were on this boat and from what I hear, NYC Winters are brutal. A couple extra layers couldn’t hurt!

The little things…

little

It seems like the first signs of the holiday season emerge earlier and earlier each year.  I have to admit, I was slightly offended last year when I saw the first pop up ornament store in early September.  This season, my gift gathering will start early as usual but honestly, I compile my lists throughout the year.

Gift giving is something I have always enjoyed.  I love the idea that a small, thoughtful token can remind someone that you are thinking of them.  The above items are some of my personal favorites anytime of the year and all under $100!

(Careful with the Levain cookies….they are seriously addictive} 🙂
