Opposites

oppo half half B  I will always gravitate towards a ripped pair of jeans over a skirt, or a masculine cross-body in leu of a girly clutch complete with bow accent (not that there’s anything wrong with a super feminine look). I also love mixing opposing styles and colors to give and otherwise basic look some edge.

My husband always knows when a tee or one of his watches has gone missing, I’m probably the culprit. 🙂  For the Summer, my darker wash denim jacket is traded for it’s lighter version and ripped denim goes from jeans to shorts becoming an overall lighter look.  Chunky black accessories and a masculine watch will definitely keep me from floating away.

Leaf

Bold prints are perfect for Summer, or year round for that matter.  The palm and leaf prints poping up everywhere fit right in with the warm weather and conjure up a fabulous island getaway.  I find with any print, the larger one’s tend to look chic and modern as opposed to smaller versions.  A neutral version is a bonus as any bright color pairs to perfection.

Brogues in Tokyo

white brogue wall

I’ve always been a little weird-ed out by white shoes, but over the past few years I’ve slowly become a fan.  When I spotted the clay sole against the detailed, white leather on these puppies in Japan, I was sold before I could even get them on my feet.

I got my first pair of brogues in Australia, reluctantly of course as I am vertically challenged and always prefer a heel.  I quickly learned a cute pair of flats were essential in a city that required a lot of walking.  NYC is obviously no exception.  The white brogue is a perfect summer shoe and a nice departure from a sandal.  Shreds and an distressed tee topped off my weekend look.

Cherry

Tokyo is one of those places I’ve always wanted to visit, but seems surreal the minute you touchdown.  It’s been a mere two days in this electric city and already massive ground has been covered.  The coveted Cherry Blossom is the main event as you can imagine during early April and within seconds of stepping into one of the city’s many parks, the clusters of pink and white are magical.

Still jet lagged, I decided some brightly colored stripes with an equally festive clutch was the perfect combination to perk up my tired soul.  Naturally cherry red was top of mind with my surrounding color palette.

Sunday in New York

sunnyc ant

As our trip home to North Carolina approaches for the holidays, we spent this past weekend finishing our Christmas shopping, catching up with friends and enjoying the city during the snow.

After a jammed packed Saturday running errands in the never-ending flurries (the Rockefeller tree did look particularly magical with the snowflakes), Sunday was spent brunching with amazing friends at Asiate (the view is fantastic and the tasting menu….life changing), strolling through a snow dusted Central Park and warming up with a cup of joe.

The little things…

little

It seems like the first signs of the holiday season emerge earlier and earlier each year.  I have to admit, I was slightly offended last year when I saw the first pop up ornament store in early September.  This season, my gift gathering will start early as usual but honestly, I compile my lists throughout the year.

Gift giving is something I have always enjoyed.  I love the idea that a small, thoughtful token can remind someone that you are thinking of them.  The above items are some of my personal favorites anytime of the year and all under $100!

(Careful with the Levain cookies….they are seriously addictive} 🙂

Bonus ~ the scarf, sleep pants, watch & necklace are all 25% off on Shopbop until Thursday night! {Use code: INTHEFAMILY25}

Africa

Although it is on my top 3 list of places I’d love to visit, I have not yet been to Africa.  I have always been intrigued by the wildlife and the fact that you have the option to observe the residents in their natural habitat during a safari, would be amazing!  After seeing David Attenborough’s special on the continent, I was ready to pack my bags, but until our tickets are booked, I will have to accept the closest I will get to an elephant will be on my shorts this Summer 🙂
